Sex Ed Expands in California

After all of the publicity a few weeks ago about a judge in California ruling that abstinence-only sex education was ineffective and inappropriate, the state assembly is moving towards requiring an expanded sex education in all schools.

Sex Ed Goes Prime Time

The Bachelorette included a pranked sex ed scene where the male contestants talked about sex and puberty in front of a group of child actors who had been directed to ask the most awkward questions possible. Censorship abounded.

Sex Educators Forget to Talk to Parents

When sex educators don’t provide full information to parents, negative consequences can follow. Last week one school came under fire for providing a deck of cards with sex terms A through Z (including, for example, a pearl necklace) to 8th and 9th graders. Another school had several students pulled after taking a group of 25 students, including 12 and 13 year olds, to a local sex toy shop.

Drop in Hawaii’s Adolescent Abortion Rate
Attributed to Multiple Factors (including sex ed!)

Hawaii’s adolescent abortion rate dropped by nearly 30% between 2010 and 2014 – a remarkable shift. There were simultaneous increases in evidence based sex education AND access to Plan B by teenagers as young as 14. There are disagreements about which of these factors played a larger role in the drop off of abortions and concerns about changes that would reverse the trend.
